Shopping

Today is Saturday

We went grocery shopping today at a supermarket that has set itself up mainly for Russians. Because Hamina is so close to the Russian border, the Russians drive over to do their grocery shopping. They even have organised bus tours of Russian grocery shoppers. The car park was full of Russian number plates and people walking around that looked just plain angry. It didn't take us long to work out how to spot a Russian.

It had a huge range of lollies and biscuits.

Anna-Maija goes here just to buy fish. There is an enormous fish counter with a plate above each type of fish so it can be tasted first, we had lunch and tried them all.

Next we went to a few department stores for a look around, Steven bought new scissors.

After our shopping outing we went to another of Anna-Maija and Heikki's boats, they have three at different locations. This one is a small timber yacht. Steven helped connect a solar panel to the battery to ensure that the bilge pump keeps operating. The boat is 80 years old and slowly takes on some water.

Tammy spotted a small boat she would like.

Tammy cooked tea for everyone and then we went off to pick berries. Berry picking is a national institution in Finland and everyone has the right to go into the forests and collect the berries. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries grow wild here and in one hour you can fill a ten litre container.

Steven has tried most of the Finnish beer and is yet to find one he doesn't like, but he will keep trying.
