Today we headed off to Bletchley Park.
On the way there we found a few new housing projects. They are not pretty. Replicas of a collective of old styles. If design should be of the time, this ain't it. I can understand why an architectural commentator recently called for legislation for architects input into residential design.
The grounds and lake of Blechley Park.
The mansion in the background along with many acres of land was purchased in 1938 by MI5 for 6000 pounds.
Bletchley Park is brilliant, it is the code deciphering centre in England that was set up in the Second World War to break the German enigma machine codes, among others.
There have been countless books written about this and quite a few films. The most recent being 'the imitation game'.
There were nine thousand people working here towards the end of the war.
All the remaining huts have been completely restored and fitted out to reflect the period.
Some of the huts.
The huts were actually fairly large building, some made of brick.
Tammy learns some code breaking basics.
This is one of the Enigma machines.
We spent most of the day there. It was brilliant.
We then decided to head for Swindon, on the way we got stuck behind a tractor, just like my dad said we would. It was amazing to watch, he ha a trailer stacked high with hay bales going along the narrow lanes at about seventy kilometres an hour. He wiped out numerous trees and had oncoming traffic swerving down driveways and up banks to avoid him. He eventually he pulled over to let the traffic past, not us, we stayed behind him, it was too much fun.
We changed our mind and decided to go to Bath as we have to be at Stonehenge tomorrow afternoon. We reset the lovely lady in my phone, still with motorways turned off and headed through more towns full of thatched cottages.
We changed our minds and decided to go to Didcot So we reset the lovely lady again who seemed to be getting a bit testy and off we went, more thatched cottages.
We changed our minds again and decided it would be best to go straight to Salisbury as that was close to Stonehenge, I reset the lovely lady again but she had been pushed too far. She just kept saying 'follow the road for 3 klms', over and over again. We rebooted her and she didn't come back. Luckily we had a back up sat Nav. Unfortunately she was more abrupt and very testy. More thatched cottages and some flint buildings.
We made it to Salisbury and I spent some hours reinstalling the lovely lady.
Tomorrow is Stonehenge day and we are looking forwards to that.
