Edinburgh Day 2

Today is Friday

Another late start. Having learnt from yesterday we donned our jumpers and raincoats and ventured out for some wandering. After 2 hours of walking around carrying our jumpers and coats in the heat we returned to our room to reduce our layers of clothing.
Off we went again, ten minutes later it started to cool down, or doooon.

Steven found a pub

We went to Grassmarket, couldn't find the market, it would appear that there hasn't been a market here for over one hundred years.

A lot of the buildings in Edinburgh are black, this was caused by the soft sandstone that was used for building being particularly susceptible to dirt. Most people in the city used to burn coal in their fires, hence the black soot. A clean air bill has been introduced banning the burning of coal. However the cost of cleaning the buildings is staggering as the soot eats into the sandstone and most buildings would need to be completely scaffolded.

Steven was booked into day care much to his delight.

We decided to leave the main tourist route and walked through a tunnel. There was a busker in the tunnel playing a saxophone. We asked him why he was playing there, where there wasn't any people, it would appear that he didn't like crowds and the acoustics in the tunnel were good. Odd for a busker.

Steven went to a pub to avoid shopping and found the barman was a young man from NSW who is on a working holiday.

We went back to the hotel for a rest and to sit out the rush hour.

Tomorrow morning we embark on our 'Orkney raider' tour for 5 days. A small coach tour through the Scottish highlands and up to the Orkney Islands to see the 5,000 year old house. No driving, no looking for campsites, no making decisions about where to go next. Sounds relaxing.

Soooooo, we went to the pub for tea. The foooood was gooood the band was bad. On the way there it rained and the sun shone at the same time, hence a rainbow.
The band had very small bladders, they kept stopping for 'a wee break' the poor laddies.
